If you go to first principles, every individual is driven by incentives: pain and pleasure.
So when deciding to do something, there is a reason behind it. A force.
Why would you wash a car from a rental company, you don’t have to. You pay for a transport solution, thats it.
However if it is is your own car, the dynamics change. Now you get the spoils of your labour. It makes sense to look after it, to make it last longer, to give you a feeling of ownership, importance if you will.
Active ownership of companies work in the same way. If you have a significant stake in a business, like a founder, this is your baby. Your passion and your life's work. It is not even work. These companies thrive, go further, for longer.
Interesting thing is that you can select these companies. That is something we look at. History is full of these interesting companies, and new ones are being formed, today, everyday.
